Motion Compensation Improves Medical Ultrasound Image Quality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Internal noise degrades the quality of a medical ultrasound imaging and thus, reduces its usefulness as a diagnostic tool. We study the effect of fusing multiple ultrasound pings on improving the quality of the ultrasound image. This approach is limited by the relative motion between the sensor array and internal organs, a problem which reduces the effect of the fusion. We present a robust motion estimation algorithm that relies on multiple receivers. We further demonstrate that fusion of multiple ping images following motion compensation improves the ultrasound image quality and removes the degrading effect of tissue motion. Finally, we demonstrate that ultrasound imaging can be enhanced by the use of image processing methods and by overlaying the skeleton on the analog image.

A Motion-Compensated Filter for Ultrasound Image Sequences
Medical ultrasound images are an important diagnostic tool for physicians, but suffer from low image intensity, dropouts, and noise in the form of speckle. I propose a new method for ltering ultrasound image sequences which is based on a motion-compensated temporal lter. The key contribution is a new method for detecting and tracking image features which is fully automatic. Applying this algori...
متن کاملA new approach for automatic motion compensation for improved estimation of perfusion quantification parameters in ultrasound imaging
This work presents a new approach for automatic motion compensation in the context of ultrasound contrast imaging. Image registration is obtained by performing a rigid transformation on the basis of a similarity criterion between a reference image and the images to be realigned. Mutual information was found to be the most suitable and robust similarity criterion in the presence of changes in co...
متن کاملReal-Time Tissue Tracking with B-Mode Ultrasound Using Speckle and Visual Servoing
We present a method for real-time tracking of moving soft tissue with B-mode ultrasound (US). The method makes use of the speckle information contained in the US images to estimate the in-plane and out-of-plane motion of a fixed target relative to the ultrasound scan plane. The motion information is then used as closed-loop feedback to a robot which corrects for the target motion. The concept i...
متن کاملRobotic Motion Compensation for 3D Ultrasound-Guided Beating Heart Surgery
Beating heart surgeries offer significant health benefits to patients by removing the need for the heart-lung machine and its attendant side effects. These surgeries are challenging to perform and only feasible in certain types of procedures because of the rapid movement of the heart. Equipping the surgeon with fast, actuated, and intelligent surgical instruments that automatically compensate f...
متن کاملVelocity estimation using synthetic aperture imaging
In a previous paper we have demonstrated that the velocity can be estimated for a plug flow using recursive ultrasound imaging [1]. The approach involved the estimation of the velocity at every emission and using the estimates for motion compensation. An error in the estimates, however, would lead to an error in the compensation further increasing the error in the estimates. In this paper the a...
